Choose the Perfect Suit for Your Same-Sex Wedding

The biggest day of your life is fast approaching, you've arranged the ceremony, chosen your invitations, booked your honeymoon, and you've even talked to the wedding band about that all-important first dance. But what about your suit? We men are often guilty of leaving the most important things to the last minute, but when it comes to your wedding suit, there's simply no excuse.

While your uncle Frank's awful moves on the dancefloor or even a poorly baked cake will fade with memory, your wedding portrait destined to hang on your living room wall will last for all eternity. And so trust us, choosing a wedding suit is, without doubt, one of the single most important decisions you and your groom-to-be will make during your wedding preparations.

So take your time and choose well and in the meantime, take a look at our tips on making the right choice.

So... What's The Difference?

We're fairly sure that your first question is what makesa same-sex wedding suit different and any other ordinary wedding suit?Well, the most obvious thing is that we're talking about a wedding devoid of a bride - we are a men's wedding suit tailor after all!Usually all the hype is about the wedding dress, but in this instance gentlemen, we have a whole new canvas to work with… well, two of them!

While the bride usually takes centre-stage, you instead have an opportunity to style looks based on the unique personality of each person in the relationship so that you can both steal the lime light! (or as much of it as you want). Some couples want matching looks, but often tastes and ideas differ. You may be bold and outgoing and want a statement suit that will be a talking piece for years to come, while your partner may want something more classic or traditional. It’s possible to combine both - so long as there’s some sort of common theme tying it altogether; whether it be colour, patterns or accessories.

Choose a Theme

Now, we're not for a moment suggesting that you go with a themed wedding complete with costumes for all (although they can be fun). What we mean by theme is to choose a base color or look that is apparent in both grooms' suits.

Matching suits look the part if you and your partner are both of a similar shape and size. However, if one of you is much taller or of a much heavier build, this can highlight the differences in your size and shape and might not be ideal for your wedding portrait.

A subtle approach to complimenting your partner's look would be to stick to similar shades and hues or to add clever finishing touches such as matching accessories.

Opposites Attract

Now as you can see from the photos below, it's not always about matching colours. The same style suits in contrasting colours can also work very well (so long as the dress code is on the same page!). This can give both grooms an opportunity to express their unique personalities through their choice of fabric colour and pattern.

Of course, finding two identical suits in different colours can be a challenge, but thankfully your local tailor (that's us!) will be able to help you out there.

Dress for the Weather

Or at the very least for the season.

Of course, it's impossible to know what the weather will be like months ahead of your big day but you can at least dress appropriately for the time of the year.

The linen suit is a classic option for beach weddings but don't be scared to bring it further onto dry land. Linen is great for hot weather and forgarden weddings as it brings a slightly more casual feel to your wedding theme. For an even more laid back look, consider losing the jacket and opting for just thelinen waistcoat and trouser. Add a crisp open collared white shirt and accessorise with a natural lapel flowerto complete the look.

When the weather gets a little chillier, it's best to opt for a pure wool suit. It will keep you warm (especially when paired with a dapper waistcoat) - and there are so many choices available in terms of style and colour. But again keep the season in mind. For example, if your wedding is in Autumn, it might be nice to go with shades of brown for your suitor incorporate those Autumn hues into your accessories.

Remember, It's All in the Fit

We'd argue that the single most important factor determining whether a suit looks good is the fit. Think about this... you could wear a totally outrageous outfit, but if it fits you well and you wear it confidently, you will still look the business. Eccentric perhaps, but still on-point. So even if you get all the other elements right, like choosing the right colour and a perfect underlying theme for your groom's wedding suits, a pair of loose-fitting jackets that hang in the shoulders will see your perfect look torn asunder.

Don't be Scared to Accessorise

We all know that accessories are the finishing touches that complete a look. Much like cushion on a sofa or a picture on a newly painted wall, a good pocket square or bow tie can take your suit to a whole new level.

Your accessories can be anything from cufflinks to tie bars, watches to shoes or even socks. So even if you prefer a minimalist look, there's still nothing stopping you from choosing a few understated accessories to tie it all together andelevate the look.
